Under our noses…

Most mornings I look over the stone bridge that crosses the Skirfare, just to see which fish are about. But only today did I see something even closer to me, nesting precariously on the wall itself. What a lovely surprise it was…

Watch out for nesting Oystercatchers…

We are very fortunate to have so many wonderful birds nesting in Wharfedale and Littondale, so can I ask that members keep a careful watch out for nests on the rocks, the beaches and the banks? This nest is, for the second year running, located in the pebbles behind the hut at Watersmeet. Whilst there…

A Royal taste for trout…

Having found some old newspapers in our parent’s attic, it was interesting to read about the King’s visit to Bolton Abbey in 1935. Not least because all the fish that were not to the preferred size of 1/2lb were rejected!

Fly tying tuition morning…

Several members of the club enjoyed another excellent fly tying session lead by Steve Cheetham, who generously gave up his time to share his skills. The hut gets flooded again…

Last nights storm resulted in the hut at Watersmeet being flooded again, and the foundations being washed away even more. I suspect there will be much work to be done when the land dries. I already have a local builder ready to bring down several tonnes of hardcore and soil to fill the hole, but…

The Oystercatchers have arrived…

Interesting to see the water quality is almost crystal clear with a strong green/blue tint as if coming straight off a…

Deja vu at Watersmeet…

The Skirfare has hit the hut at Watersmeet hard again during the floods. Ads a reminder, here is the damage in April 2019… And here is the recent damage in February 2020… There is clearly some work to be done to protect the hut for the future, so I am currently in discussions with a…

Storm Ciara causes havoc over the weekend…

The floods caused by Storm Ciara have been high and very impressive. The Skirfare was high and the Wharfe even higher. I can only hope the hut at Watersmeet has stayed above water.
